Aircraft maintenance in California
California has the second-highest median wage for aircraft mechanics in the country at roughly $95,570 per year, second only to New Jersey. Wage strength reflects the concentration of aerospace manufacturing, commercial aviation, and government work across the state — from Boeing and Northrop Grumman in Southern California to Joby Aviation, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, and a sizable corporate aviation sector across the Bay Area and Mojave Desert.
Major hubs include Los Angeles International (LAX), San Francisco International (SFO), Long Beach, Burbank, Mojave Air & Space Port, and Edwards Air Force Base. Specialty work is unusually deep here: composite repair, experimental aircraft, advanced manufacturing, military flight test, and the growing eVTOL/UAS sector all employ A&P-certified mechanics, often at premiums above the airline scale.
Cost of living is the trade-off — California's nominal wages do not stretch as far as Texas or Georgia in real dollars. But for mechanics targeting specialty work, defense contracting, or the next-generation aerospace sector, California offers a depth of opportunity unmatched by any other state. Most California Part 147 schools are concentrated in the Los Angeles basin, the Inland Empire, and the Bay Area, with several offering strong VA Yellow Ribbon participation.
