Aircraft maintenance in Texas
Texas is one of the strongest aviation maintenance markets in the United States. The state hosts the headquarters of two of the four largest U.S. airlines — American Airlines (Fort Worth) and Southwest Airlines (Dallas) — alongside major defense and OEM operations at Lockheed Martin Fort Worth, Bell Textron, and StandardAero in San Antonio. Combined, these employers create some of the most consistent demand for FAA-certified A&P mechanics in the country.
Pay tracks the national majors: a Southwest Airlines mechanic at top scale earns roughly $140,000 base plus overtime and shift differentials, while a Lockheed Fort Worth aircraft mechanic on the F-35 line typically clears $85,000–$115,000 with clearance premiums on top. Cost of living across the major Texas metros is meaningfully lower than coastal markets, which makes the effective paycheck one of the best in the industry.
If you're looking at Part 147 schools in Texas, the largest concentration is in the Dallas–Fort Worth corridor, with additional programs in Houston, San Antonio, and several community colleges across East and Central Texas. GI Bill eligibility is strong — most Texas Part 147 schools are VA-approved, and the Hazlewood Act provides additional state-level tuition benefits to qualifying veterans.
