Aircraft maintenance in Ohio
Ohio has deep aviation roots — it's the birthplace of the Wright brothers — and a still-substantial aerospace maintenance and manufacturing sector. The anchor is Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, one of the largest and most important Air Force installations in the country, employing thousands in aircraft maintenance, engineering, and logistics roles, many of them civilian.
The state also hosts significant OEM and engine work, including GE Aerospace's engine operations in the Cincinnati area, plus cargo and regional aviation activity around Columbus, Cleveland, and Rickenbacker. Pay sits near the national median, and Ohio's low cost of living makes the effective paycheck competitive with higher-nominal-wage coastal states.
Ohio's Part 147 schools are concentrated around its major metros — Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Dayton — with a mix of community colleges and technical centers. Most are VA-approved, and the proximity to Wright-Patterson makes the region a natural fit for transitioning military maintainers.
