Aircraft maintenance in Florida
Florida is one of the largest aviation maintenance markets in the country, anchored by year-round flying weather, a dense network of MRO facilities, and one of the highest concentrations of Part 147 schools of any state. The Miami metro alone is a global MRO hub, servicing widebody fleets for Latin American and international carriers, while Central Florida around Orlando and the Space Coast blends commercial aviation with a booming space and defense sector.
Employers span the full range: Aviation Institute of Maintenance and National Aviation Academy run large private programs, while airlines, cargo carriers, and independent repair stations hire heavily across Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, and Pensacola. The Pensacola/Panhandle region also feeds the strong Navy aviation maintenance pipeline. Pay runs near the national median, and Florida's lack of a state income tax lifts effective take-home relative to comparable-wage states.
Florida's Part 147 schools are spread statewide — a real advantage for students who want to train close to home. Most are VA-approved, and the state's large veteran population makes GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon usage common at both public technical colleges and private academies.

Becoming an A&P mechanic in Florida
Florida has 23 FAA-certified Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools and 1 DOL-registered aviation maintenance apprenticeship. Part 147 programs prepare students to earn their Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic certificate through required curriculum and hands-on training hours, after which students must pass the FAA written, oral, and practical exams to become certificated. Registered apprenticeships offer a paid, employer-sponsored path — you earn wages while working toward the same A&P certificate. 17 of the 24 programs in Florida are approved for veterans using Post-9/11 GI Bill or other VA education benefits.
