SOUTH SEATTLE COLLEGE
About this school
South Seattle College's Aviation Maintenance Technology program prepares students for FAA-certificated careers as aircraft mechanics in the heart of the nation's largest aerospace hub. Located in King County, Washington — home to 45,000 aerospace employees and 400 companies — the program offers hands-on training in aircraft repair, manufacturing, and inspections, with small classes, personalized instruction, and a diverse student body that includes international students. The college offers four pathways under the Aviation Maintenance Technology umbrella: the 128-credit Aviation Maintenance Technology AAS (the primary path to FAA Airframe & Powerplant eligibility), the 140-credit AAS-Transfer (designed for students intending to transfer to a four-year program), and stackable certificates in Aviation Airframe Tech (100 credits) and Aviation Powerplant Tech (101.5 credits) for students focused on a single rating or building toward the full A&P credential. Programs run on Washington's quarter system rather than the semester system used by most aviation schools nationally — meaning students can enroll in fall, winter, spring, and summer terms, with a typical full-time AMT student completing the AAS in about 8-9 quarters (roughly 2-2.5 years). Financial aid and GI Bill funding are available across all four programs. International students are eligible to apply (F-1/M-1 visa pathway). The program's location in Seattle gives graduates direct proximity to Boeing, Alaska Airlines maintenance operations, Delta TechOps Seattle, and numerous Part 145 repair stations across the Puget Sound aviation corridor — one of the strongest entry-level hiring markets in the country.
