UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY
About this school
Utah State University's Aircraft Maintenance Technician program is the school's direct, focused route to the FAA A&P certificate. Offered as an Associate of Applied Science through the Aviation Technology Department in the S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, the degree is built so that on completion students meet the FAA requirements to test for both the Airframe and the Powerplant maintenance technician licenses through a single program. The curriculum is hour-intensive and lab-driven: all required coursework and lab time — 2,030 hours in total — is built into the degree, with much of it spent doing hands-on work in USU's maintenance management laboratory rather than in lecture. Students train on the full range of A&P work, including jet (turbine) engines, reciprocating engines, and airframes, plus accessory and structural skills like sheet metal, riveting, and composite manufacturing and repair. The result is a graduate who is shop-ready and eligible to sit for the A&P exams, which is the credential that opens the field. This is the more streamlined of USU's maintenance offerings — where the Maintenance Management bachelor's wraps business and supervisory coursework around the A&P training, this AAS keeps the emphasis squarely on the technical skills and certification. USU reports a high job-placement rate for program graduates, who go on to maintenance technician roles at airlines, corporate, and general aviation operators (including helicopter maintenance), fixed-base operators, repair stations, aircraft engine and component manufacturers, aerospace manufacturers, and government work with the FAA, NTSB, and military aircraft maintenance contracts. A practical detail for applicants: students furnish their own basic tool set and toolbox, which runs roughly $900 to $1,400 with USU discounts. Admission standards are a bit higher than the management track — first-year students need a 3.0 high school GPA and transfer students a 2.75 GPA. The degree is offered on the Logan campus and is also available through USU's statewide system, including Price (USU Eastern).
