ANDREWS UNIVERSITY
About this school
Andrews University operates an FAA-certified Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician School out of Chan Shun Hall on its Berrien Springs, Michigan campus, within the university's College of Professions. FAA written tests as well as the oral and practical exams on site, so students complete the full certification process without leaving campus. The program trains students across the full A&P curriculum — metal and composite structures, welding and machining, electrical and electronic systems, aircraft instruments, fuel systems, hydraulics and pneumatics, environmental systems, reciprocating and gas-turbine engines, propellers, and engine overhaul — through sixteen FAA-approved AVMT courses combining classroom theory with hands-on shop work. The approach is built for newcomers; no prior maintenance background is assumed. Both the Airframe and Powerplant ratings are earned over four semesters (two academic years), with the school alternating which rating it offers each year — one year Airframe, the next Powerplant. Beyond the standalone certificate, the maintenance training can roll into a Bachelor of Technology degree and can be paired with the university's flight or business programs for students who want to combine credentials. A useful distinction for many applicants: U.S. citizens are not required to enroll as degree-seeking Andrews students to earn their A&P ratings, though non-U.S. citizens must be formally admitted to a degree program to satisfy FAA requirements. A&P students also do not need an FAA medical certificate. Costs beyond standard tuition include a tool set, lab fees, and FAA testing fees, and while the aviation department doesn't offer aviation-specific scholarships, general university scholarships are available. As a Seventh-day Adventist institution, Andrews is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the Adventist Accrediting Association, and the FAA. The maintenance faculty bring backgrounds spanning mission, corporate, airline, cargo, and military aviation.
